Getting Started is Simple

Consultation
Every hive begins with a home visit. Our beekeeper will learn about your experience level and hopes for keeping bees. Then, we’ll prepare a customized plan for your hive.

Installation
We set up your new hive and ensure everything is safe and secure. Our beekeeper will walk you through what to expect as your hive gets started, so you feel confident and excited.

Tending & Coaching
We visit every two weeks to inspect and care for your hive, keeping it healthy and productive all season with our expert care and personalized coaching services.

Harvesting
In the second year when there's surplus honey, we harvest and jar it for you so it's ready to enjoy - straight from your own bees to your kitchen table.

Is backyard beekeeping legal in Northern Virginia, Maryland, and DC?
Yes! Backyard beekeeping is legal across the DMV, though local ordinances vary. Some areas have specific requirements around hive placement and numbers. At Homegrown Hives, we follow local guidance to guarantee your hive is set up the right way from day one.
How much space do I need for a backyard beehive?
Less than you think! A single beehive has roughly the footprint of a small filing cabinet. Most suburban backyards have plenty of room. During your home consultation, our beekeeper will identify the ideal placement for your hive - factoring in sun exposure, water access, and neighbor considerations.
Is beekeeping safe for kids and families?
Absolutely - that's exactly what we're built for. Our beekeeper has a master's degree in early childhood education and years of classroom experience. Developmentally-appropriate instruction is provided for every age, and many of our youngest participants become the biggest bee enthusiasts in the family!
When is the best time to start a beehive?
Spring is ideal - typically April through June - when flowers are blooming and nectar is abundant. We're currently booking Spring 2026 consultations and spots fill quickly, so we recommend reaching out early to secure yours.
Do I need any experience or equipment?
None at all. We bring everything, from the hive and equipment to the bees themselves. No prior experience necessary. Our service is specifically designed to make beekeeping accessible for complete beginners and families with young children.
